Alone Together by Random International

Alone Together by postdigital art group Random International, shown here for the first time in the United States, invites us into a choreography of light, configured in real time by our movements through the space yet completely beyond our control. Unsuspecting observers one minute, chance participants the next, we are selected at random and thrust into the spotlight by an intensely bright and focussed array of light beams. Whether seeking out the light or trying to avoid it, we experience moments of isolation and togetherness that reward our urge to feel seen and, simultaneously, feed the anxieties that come with such public visibility.

Algorithmic surveillance and tracking—methods often deployed for identification purposes on national security grounds—find a more idiosyncratic and arbitrary application in Alone Together, offering a powerful reflection on the intensifying contradictions between privacy and exposure that we each face daily amid our increasingly advanced technological landscape. Though playful on the surface, Alone Together’s central premise remains existential: left in the dark as to the machine’s pursuits and intentions, we become vividly aware of how a feeling of empowerment can rapidly turn into one of vulnerability as the lights trail us indefinitely.

Conceived as an evolution of Random International’s continued exploration into humankind’s fluctuating relationship with technology, Alone Together builds upon the world-renowned artists’ acclaimed history of experiential works that engage the senses while eliciting introspection. Their practice encourages active questioning of the boundaries between the individual and the collective, the digital and the physical, the human and the machine.
