A.A. Murakami: Silent Fall

Among the best exhibitions in London in 2022.” — Condé Nast Traveller

Silent Fall looks back to deep time, when the earliest forms of life emerged from self-organising bubbles in primordial seas, and forward to a possible future, when forests might only exist as manufactured replicas. Under this grove of automata, the organic and the artificial coexist in an uncanny tableau that relies on the harmonious fusion of engineering, chemistry and art to generate unnatural phenomena.

This moonlit garden invites a contemporary reading of The Fall from Earthly Paradise, an allegory that finds resonance at a time when our environment is viewed with a new fragility and questions over what it is to be human in a future of artificial intelligence are arising. The trees, bearing mist-filled bubbles, remind us of the fleeting nature of existence. Delicate aromas of pine and bergamot, of rain and pink pepper, fill the air as orbs of scent are caught and burst, collectively acting as an olfactory archive of lost forests.

Hovering between nature and technology, Silent Fall evokes both the origins of life and future worlds. It continues a body of work the artists call ‘Ephemeral Tech’, in which technology transcends familiar digital interfaces by employing ethereal materials that engage all the senses.
